I’ve been trying to think of content for the site during this month of Blaugust, and despite my habit of bouncing around projects and interests like a Superball inside a metal drum, I can’t muster up enough interest in writing about anything that I’m doing. So I thought, “what if I do something specific for the period”, and I thought of recounting a solo game of Star Trek Adventures: Captain’s Log.
The Captain’s Log is a version of the first edition of the Star Trek Adventures tabletop roleplaying game which allows a single player to roll on tables to generate a mission, rewards, and complications. In between those mechanical steps the player is expected to come up with the narrative putty to fill in the gaps, Star Trek style.
If you’ve been reading on this site for a while, thank you! And you might remember that I had been posting a version of a Captain’s Log game about two years back, except in completely narrative form. In that case, I had rolled the entire scenario, sat down and thought about it, and put it together in story form. I was trying to post chapters here, but as with basically everything I try to do, that initiative got derailed; I do still have the narrative squirreled away in either Notion or Obsidian, but I think that starship has sailed.
This time, I might recount the rolls, explain the decisions…maybe even turn it into a “community choose your own adventure” style project. Who knows! But before I do any of that, I need to re-read the rules because it’s been a hot minute since I’ve reviewed them.
