I didn’t really expect my Saturday evening to feature my very first World of Warcraft expansion campaign completion, but here I am.

Of course, my history with WoW is spotty in that I’ve never played long enough to reach the end of a main story line, but there’s something about The War Within’s first iteration that worked for me on virtually every level. Although I didn’t really know the entire story leading up the opening of TWW, and while I wasn’t always paying attention to the narrative during my time in Khaz Algar, I liked what I did learn well enough. I also had enough experience with the lore and characters to understand the magnitude of the opening of the expansion, and I think that was a good way to get me wanting to know more long enough for the rest of the content to start firing for me.

It certainly doesn’t hurt that I really love these zones. I have a hate-hate relationship with some areas in this game — mostly ones in the starting areas that I never want to see again — but I never got tired of traversing these lands. I feel like there’s a very tight design here, in part because most of the expansion takes place underground and is naturally bound by Azeroth itself, but in doing so I think Blizzard has given each corner of each zone a purpose.

Being a mainly solo player, I have nothing but good things to say about the delves and follower dungeons. These experiences have opened up what I actually want to do in the game, whereas in the years past I’ve always avoided playing with other folks I didn’t know. While the execution of “a dungeon experience” isn’t high on my list of things I really enjoy doing, I am thankful that I have been able to see this kind of content after so many years.

I’m not going to re-tread the features of TWW since I’m certainly not the first to complete the main story quest, but I will say that I’ve finally enjoyed my time in WoW. I know a new area is opening next week, so getting my campaign completed was high on my to-do list, and I am looking forward to working on that when it drops. I’m also still going to continue through with my main and other characters to clean up the side-quests that I had been avoiding in my drive to complete the campaign. I’m hoping I’ll be able to maintain my level of enthusiasm for WoW for at least the remainder of my just-renewed three month subscription period.
